Outcome of Doncaster Athletic Club Coach Forum –        Wednesday 26th September 2007.

 

The forum was attended by 18 Doncaster AC members and coaches. Those present were asked to identify:

 

1.    Good coaching practise which should continue.

2.  Coaching areas in need of development.

 

The top three areas of good coaching practise:

·       Coaches are providing an enjoyable training environment for our athletes.

·       Coaches specialising in various events.

·       Continued emphasis to ensure track, lane and facility etiquette.

 

The top three areas of coaching development:

·       Increasing the number of coaches through increase in senior coaches and nurturing junior coaches.

·       Expansion of role of Community Development Coach.

·       Improve communication between coaches.

 

Other identified areas of good practise:

1.    Willingness of volunteers.

2.  Differentiation within sessions to challenge all age groups for young people.

3.  Retain friendliness within the Club.

4.  Retain existing working structure.

5.  Four weekly fees then membership guarantees attendance and income.

6.  Developing relationship with community coach.

 

Other identified areas of development:

1.    Ratio of coaches per athlete (Clubmark recommend 15 to 1)

2.  Improve introductory arrangements for new members.

3.  Separate arrangements for new very young members.

4.  Better planning for winter training.

5.  A list of coaches and group activities at registration point.

6.  Register of runners going outside of track.

7.  Need to decide whether athletes progress through age or ability.

8.  Split sessions needed.

9.  Payment for coaches.

10.Pathway of progression for athletes.

11.More level 4 coaches needed.

 

Where do we go from here?

 

A coaching development group will be formed to meet within four weeks to implement the development areas. Dave Grayson, strategic director for coaching development will lead the meeting.
