Feeling great

In about October I started suffering from pain in my lower stomach which had a serious impact on my training and racing.  I believe that I damaged something when I ran the “Pain Barrier” (having fell down about 10 times) and the niggle I picked up and dismissed eventually forced me to stop running.

I did a bit of turbo training and swimming, as I am not use to these sports I find them a lot more difficult than running.

The Doncaster Pacers

Myself, Rose James and Janet Hampson were all injured and we decided to set up a group for new runners called the “Doncaster Pacers”.  This would be the “Run England” group of Doncaster Athletic Club.  This gave us a new focus and in late January we were ready to launch.  This has been a fantastic experience and we have recently finished the first course boasted the membership of Doncaster Athletic Club by about 20 members.  We will continue to work with the group so they can achieve their full potential.

We are grateful for the support of coach Paul Brown who has helped us lead the sessions and every one else who has helped and encouraged the group.

The next Doncaster Pacers course starts on 20 May 2014, we already have 12 non runners signed up.  Its just £40 for the 9 week course and then its free for the rest of 2014.

Doncaster Parkrun

Doncaster was lacking its own Parkrun until around the time I got injured.  A number of people got together including myself and we were mentored by the Barnsley Parkrun for about 6 weeks who signed us off.  The main drivers were Mark Hudson and Dom Patterson.  A great group of regular and occasional volunteers formed and the event has been held every Saturday morning at Sandall Park starting at 9am since.

I am there most weeks, I have run it about 4 times and I enjoy time keeping and taking photographs of the runners which are uploaded to the Doncaster Parkrun group.

We have encouraged the Doncaster Pacers to run at the parkrun and about 10 have done to date.  The parkrun is a great addition to the running comunity of Doncaster and I am proud to be part of it.

My Rehabilitation

As I have been involved with the Doncaster Pacers and the Doncaster Parkrun I have focused my energy on these projects.  I am also the men’s captain at Doncaster Athletic Club, manage the Doncaster Athletic Clubs website and I am involved as an assistant with the organisation of 3 open road races in Doncaster.  So although I have not done much running most of my time when I am not at work is spent on running related things.

I had 4 physio appointments, 2 with Eddie Fletcher and 2 with Jenny Blizard.  They helped me overcome my injuries.  I also visited my GP who was also very helpful to my surprise.

As I was running with the Doncaster Pacers beginners course my running was dead steady which helped.

Since December 1st 2013 to 12 April 2014 I have run a total of 200 miles (only 10 miles in January).  Go back 12 months, I was running 200 miles a month!  The thing is, I did not feel that I had lost much fitness.

To test myself I ran the Parkrun 3 times and I did 22, 21 and 20 minutes.

The South Yorkshire Road League came around, this was the reason I joined DAC 7 years ago and I did the first race in 31:57.  Not a PB for 5 miles but off the back of zero speed work and not much running I was delighted.  I think this shows that with a minimal tick over mileage with a bit of swimming and turbo training you don’t loose fitness very quickly.

Today I decided to run 10 miles, the furthest I have run since October (6 months ago).  This was 50% off road, with a good hill in it and the railway footbridge in Sandall Beat woods.  I had a couple of slower miles but I averaged 7 minute miles!

My splits:

1) – 1m – 6:41(6:41/m) – 125cal
2) – 1m – 6:34(6:34/m) – 117cal
3) – 1m – 6:30(6:30/m) – 117cal
4) – 1m – 7:48(7:48/m) – 117cal
5) – 1m – 7:05(7:05/m) – 118cal
6) – 1m – 7:06(7:06/m) – 115cal
7) – 1m – 7:23(7:23/m) – 119cal
8) – 1m – 7:14(7:14/m) – 115cal
9) – 1m – 7:01(7:01/m) – 119cal
10) – 1m – 6:45(6:45/m) – 117cal

New Runners Course – Doncaster Pacers

Myself, Rose and Janet recently attended a England Athletics course called “Run Leaders”.  We wanted to do this so as to attract new members to Doncaster Athletic Club, specifically senior road runners.  After the course we had several meetings and we are now ready to start the course.  We are calling the group Doncaster Pacers.

Full details can be found here:

Capture

We feel the course offers great value for money at £40 for a nine week course including 22 coached sessions, all the facilities at Doncaster Athletic Club (Changing Rooms, Showers, Toilets, Covered Stand, Free Car Parking, use of the 6 Lane Track, Social Evenings and Access to our Coaches) and at the end of the course £40 off the membership fee.  So any that join up will get the course and membership until 2015 for £65 (this includes a Doncaster AC vest valued at £15), and then they will pay the renewal fee (currently £40) for subsequent years.

The course starts on 4 February 2014 and we are currently taking names.

This is a big commitment from the run leaders as we are all competing members and we are going to lose our Tuesday and Thursday evening training sessions whilst we run the course but we are all very committed to the idea of introducing people who think they can’t run and helping them achieve their full potential.

Recovering

After the Percy Pud my body basically refused to let me run.  I think I picked up an injury a few weeks ago when I fell down many times at the Pain Barrier in my “core” area but I kind of ignored it like runners do.

I was unable to compete in the December DAC Time Trials.

I have been having great problems with my stomach and the top of my legs which has been uncomfortable and sometimes painful.

I had a couple of sessions at Blizard Physio, one to sort out a stiff back (before Percy Pud) and just before Christmas to deal with my stomach and leg problems.  I am pleased to report I genuinely believe I am on the mend.  I have been stretching like a mad man for the last 3 days and I think this has really helped and I have been using my turbo trainer.

Fingers crossed I should be back to full fitness in a couple of weeks which is great as myself, Rose and Janet are going to start a beginners running group.

Percy Pud – Not to be

It was the Percy pud 10k today, in the days before the race I had considered this to be my most important 10k of the year as I do not feel that I have put in a good 10k this year.  Unfortunately I still feel like that.  It is inevitable that putting the quantity of races that I have over the last 2 months will ware me down and I felt it today.  My legs have felt tired for most of the week and they did today.

I set off at my target pace with the small hope that I might surprise myself and I hit 1 mile in 6 minutes. This was ok but I could tell it had taken more effort than it should have and it was fairly inevitable my pace would soon drop off.  I could not maintain my pace on the climbs and when I am struggling to get to 6 minute miles on a descent I know I am in trouble.

At about 5.5k Jay and Steve passed me, I wanted to keep with them but no chance.  Warren soon passed me and they took a minute out of me in the last 4k.  Jayne also passed me around this time and I could not match her pace.  I was always expecting Richard to pass me but I just finished ahead of him.

I am delighted for Jay and Warren who both ran PB’s on what was a near perfect day for this excellent race.

Rose ran a PB on her birthday so well done Rose.

I hope Stu is ok, he is struggling with injury at the moment.

Recovery run with Lee

Not feeling great, trying to prepare for Percy Pud on Sunday so decided to run at my recovery pace.  I took Sophie to the club so I had to be back for 7pm, Lee Watkinson also had to be back for 7 so we ran together, My HR was high for the first mile but it then dropped to my recovery zone which was ok.  Fairly easy run but legs aching for last mile, presumably because of my bit of a cold.

Lee is one of our most improved runners this year, he needs to get some races some ASAP so we can see where he is at.

1) 1m – 7:12(7:12/m) 156/175bpm 17cal

My New Spikes

I have aways run in Mizuno Cross Country Spike shoes.  The same pair for the last 6 years in fact.  The spikes seized up about 4 years ago so as this year started they were quite blunt and short, I ran 3 cross country races in them and then I decided to splash out and get some new ones due to having serious grip problems.

I went for the Saucony Grid Shay XC 3 and I took them for a spin on Sunday 24 November in the South Yorkshire Cross Country League at Campsall Country Park.  I ran with 12mm spikes in and I only had one slip in the entire race.  I also ended the race with dry feet.  The route was quite stoney for perhaps 15%  of the course and I think 9mm would have been better.  I bent some of the 12mm spikes and 1 broke.  I have got a painful right heal, this was caused by jumping ditches and landing quite heavily, hopefully this will not be a recurring issue when using these new shoes.  I think I like them which is a good job as my old Mizuno’s are in the bin.

Cross Country and Track Session

On Sunday 24 November I made the short journey to Campsall Country park with Rose and Sophie, this was the third race in the South Yorkshire Cross Country League.  It was raining a bit when we got there but it soon dried up.  Up went my small “thunder run” tent next to the enormous tents from the other South Yorkshire clubs and we were all set.

Sophie raced first on her 1 mile loop, she had refused to warm up and was quite tearful but she ran well and was happy when she was finished, she then disappeared into the tent with her DS.

Rose ran at 12:00 with Caroline and Georgina from DAC.  All these ladies race week in week out for the Club with Caroline having recently (last week) competed for England at a Cross Country event at Cardiff, Georgena raced on the day before at Blackpool and Rose did the Abbey Dash last week.  Its a nice course and the ladies all did great.

The men’s race was off at 12:30, I did a lap with Richard  and Pete to warm up and to try to decide if I should put 9 or 12mm spikes in.  This is tougher than it sounds, I went with the 12mm option and just about got away with it, I think I should have gone for 9mm.  Richard ran with 9mm spikes and he thinks he should have run with 12mm.  One stream to jump (3 times, hurt my foot on this) or get wet and 2 stiles to climb 3 times.  The race went ok, minor back pain on the first lap after a ditch jump crossing.  I got passed about 400m from the finish, I let the fella get 10m on me but with 100m to go a put in a sprint, I got level with him, he sprinted but then backed off (1 second later and I would have backed off).

Its great to take part at an event where runners aged 8 – 80+ take part and support each other in a competitive environment, the South Yorkshire League is fantastic for this and Doncaster AC support these events in all age groups.

1) 1m – 6:18(6:18/m) 163/192bpm 37cal
2) 1m – 6:41(6:41/m) 161/166bpm 108cal
3) 1m – 7:02(7:02/m) 161/168bpm 115cal
4) 1m – 7:09(7:09/m) 159/164bpm 114cal
5) 1m – 6:55(6:55/m) 161/168bpm 110cal
6) 0.7m – 4:35(6:32/m) 163/168bpm 75cal

Track session 26 November

I missed last weeks track session due to running in the Time Trials.  Coach Dave Tune put on a good session tonight, 1 x 1600m with 2 mins recovery and then 10 x 600m with 1 min recovery.  The 1600 was great finishing in 5:59.  For those racing at the weekend we were told to run 8 x 600’s, my splits were:

1) 0.39m – 2:12(5:38/m) 152/164bpm 31cal
2) 0.39m – 2:08(5:28/m) 155/166bpm 30cal
3) 0.39m – 2:11(5:34/m) 154/166bpm 31cal
4) 0.4m – 2:13(5:34/m) 156/167bpm 32cal
5) 0.4m – 2:08(5:15/m) 160/169bpm 31cal
6) 0.39m – 2:11(5:35/m) 157/169bpm 32cal
7) 0.39m – 2:12(5:40/m) 157/166bpm 32cal
8) 0.39m – 2:12(5:37/m) 159/169bpm 32cal

Good session and well done to those who ran 10.  Really good turnout for the session.

8 and a bit miles around Cantley 21/11

Not really sure what this run was, mixture of recovery and threshold with the club – Set up a couple of segments for the STRAVA team to have a go on.  Bit of an ache in my stomach but looking forward to Campsall Cross Country on Sunday to try out my new spikes.  This will be my 12th race in  7 weeks.  Only 2 more to go until I can have a break lol.

Looking forward to volunteering at the Doncaster Park Run tomorrow, not running again until Sunday.
